At the age of twenty one, before leaving Eugene, Oregon for San Francisco the then unknown writer Richard Brautigan donated all of his work to Edna Webster, mother of both Brautigan’s best friend and first love.
These works remained unpublished until 1995 when Edna Webster sold the manuscripts to Burton W a collector of Brautigan’s work.
The manuscripts (which contain predominantly poems, prose and some short stories) are an important precursor to what would become some of Brautigan’s more iconic and well known writings and set a tone for his particular style.
N.U propose that the meaning of these particular works by Brautigan can be construed as a series of instructions and are open to interpretation. By developing a body of visually focussed works N.U are paying homage to Brautigan and recognising that perhaps his earliest works are some of his most important.
